Paul Alexis lisant à Émile Zola
1869-1870
R151-FWN602

_______

In Paul Alexis lisant à Emile Zola has Alexis in a chair, close to us, with his head perhaps a bit lower than the painter; Zola, who sits on a mattress, is further back and lower down. We can read this in three dimensions without any problem, but in the painting – as in R149 – the more distant Zola will appear inordinately small. Cézanne’s solution is both simple and unobtrusive: he paints Alexis’ torso and outstretched thighs about the same size as Zola’s whole figure and joins the two figures at Alexis’ knees; this creates a continuous arc, or a single mass, that sweeps from one head to the other and passes through the knees, and keeps the figures in nearly the same plane.
